ZF Customs Manager in Northville, Michigan
Position Summary: The Head of Customs Management (US/CA) is responsible for developing and leading the ZF North American region customs compliance strategy and alignment with the global Supply Chain Management processes and standards for all ZF facilities in the USA and Canada. This position is responsible for managing and directing the corporate customs team in the development and implementation of customs strategies and initiatives in order to support and fulfill the requirements of internal and external customers to ensure region-wide compliance with government regulatory agencies.
•Manage the classification of imported parts and associated database in order to pay appropriate duties and fees according to the proper valuation method, as defined by U.S. Customs Border Protection Department.
•Implement procedures that enable ZF to benefit from the use of Free Trade Agreements (e.g. lower duty costs). This includes managing processes of obtaining ‘certificates of origin’ and related legal requirements.
•Manage Supply Chain Security & Compliance in the region to ensure adherence to government regulations regarding Foreign Trade Zones, NAFTA agreements, Security Initiatives (PIP-CA, CTPAT-US, NEEC-MX); evaluate logistics partners (e.g. brokers, carriers, warehousing, etc.) and ensure compliance with applicable governmental regulations.
•Manage customs processes which ensure compliance with FTZ (Free Trade Zone) requirements, and allow plants to benefit from duty-free imports, lower taxes, and streamlined customs procedures.
•Implement standards and methods for customs compliance within the region, thus ensuring region-wide adherence to US/CA government customs regulations. This includes developing educational tools and conducting training on methods and processes by which ZF employees and facilities are able to comply with legal requirements.
•Assign, check work, enforce company rules, review performance, initiate Changes-In-Status, train, develop and motivate employees, champion individual and team efforts and aid in the development of managers and professionals to achieve individual leadership and company goals and objectives.
•Manage department performance by reviewing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and implementing other metrics where applicable; measure ongoing performance.
•Identify organizational skill requirements, assess gaps in key skill areas, implement strategy to close the gaps and strengthen the organization and provide adequate succession planning.
•Provide daily import/export operational guidance to the various business units in North America.
•Lead auditing of NAFTA certificates and communicate findings to all parties for compliance requirements.
•Participate in continuous improvement programs and provide support to team efforts
•Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, formal training, reviewing professional publications, establishing and expanding professional networks, and participating in professional societies.
•Ensure departmental compliance with all TS16949 and ISO-14001 requirements, ZF corporate policies, and divisional directives; initiate and support the development of new procedures if necessary.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills and Experience:
•Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or related field
•10+ years of supply chain experience with 4+ years of experience with customs administration and/or supply chain-related project activities
•Strong knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations (federal, state, and local), including but not limited to, free trade programs, customs compliance auditing, HTSUS classifications, etc.
•Knowledge of TS16949 and ISO standards and processes
•Knowledge of tariff classifications as well as country of origin issues
•Proficient in Microsoft Office tools – particularly in Excel using formulas such as vLookup, concatenate, and pivot tables
•Strong problem solving and analytical skills with a high attention to detail
•Proven ability to analyze and interpret data and supply chain-related processes
•Proven ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel and management
•Solid organization and time/project management skills
•English language competency – both oral and written
Preferred Skills and experience:
•Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or related field
•Supervisory experience working in Materials Management or Logistics within a manufacturing environment
•Experience with creating macros in Excel
•TS16949 and ISO 14001 awareness training
•Customs Brokers license or related customs/supply chain certification
•Knowledge of SAP
•Experience in the Automotive industry
•German and/or Spanish language skills
